8th and Woodmere Intersection

The intersection of 8th St and Woodmere Ave is a critical intersection for TART trail users. However, the existing configuration has a narrow crossing area for trail users, particularly on the north side of the intersection. This small area creates conflict between bikes and pedestrians during busy times.

While the existing traffic signal does give trail users a dedicated crossing phase, wait times can be long— encouraging trail users to just cross when clear or use one of the RRFB crossings further down 8th St instead.

Additionally, the turn from 8th St to Woodmere Ave has a large turning radius, encouraging high speeds right next to where trail users are waiting to cross.

Some conceptual improvements could include:

  • Decrease the turning radius to encourage slower turns for passenger vehicles, but still allow for large vehicles to maneuver the turn with ease by constructing a truck apron

  • Optimize signal timing to lower wait times for trail users waiting to cross

  • Widen the crosswalk and landing on the north side of 8th St.
